WHAT THE DOCTOR DIDN'T TELL ME : HOW I PAID THE PRICE
One afternoon a friend and I were having a cup of tea and talking about the health care system. I'm sure a lot of people get around to talking about this at some point, This day however it would take on a different meaning for me.
What she told me was a sad and dissapointing personal story as to what her doctor didnt tell her.
Apparently this doctor didn't listen to her concerns about some issues she was having. These later led to a heart attack, in her opinion. Telling him of chest pain for a month, her high blood pressure concerns, her elevated cholesterol levels(from the last physical she had ) and a reccommendation from another doctor at a renowned hosital in Hamilton,Ontario was not enough information for her doctor to take action and order some cardiac enzyme tests as suggested by the other hospital.
Apparently her doctor didn't like to take instruction from what he termed ,"an intern at the emergency department in another city." He even held up his hand in the air in the "STOP RIGHT THERE" position.
There definetly was no talking to him about her concerns.
She told me she was nervous to challenge his authority because he might let her go as his patient. There is a doctor shortage where we live but I told her she should have gone to the emergency room to get another opinion.
Being quiet and not putting herself first put my friend at risk.
Many people give the power to their doctors to make decisions for them or no decisions at all.
My friend said she knew deep down that she should have done more for herself . I told her to not live in the past but to learn from this and listen to the inner voice when you hear it saying something isn't right with this situation.
I beleive that if more people took action on their own behalf they would be happier with themselves and feel empowered to do it more and more.
It is a wonderful feeling when you get results after you venture out of your comfort zone and take action. It took me some time to learn this myself.
My friend said that what I was saying made sense and that the first opportunity she had to try this theory she was going to do it.
This was a win win day for both of us. I felt I had helped someone and she seemed happier and more confident than when we first started having tea.
Oh …..by the way… the tea went cold but we can always make another cup.
However you may not get a chance to make a wise decision for yourself if you let the moment get cold.
