Anxiety Phobias : Who Knew There Would Be So Many

Talked to a friend of mine today who is involved in the study of fear and phobias.

I did not think there would be as many on the list as I discovered.

Looking into the world of phobias I realized that anxiety phobias are very common and many people are experiencing them all around us and we are not aware of most of them.I was given a book to look at regarding this subject and after two pages of fears and phobias my mind was boggled.

There even was a word for having a fear of fear itself, phobophobia.

Here are some other phobias for your interest.

Fear of:

Work: Ergophobia

The Number Thirteen: Triskaidekaphobia

Strangers: Xenophobia

Pain: Algophobia

New Things: Neophobia

Ghosts: Phasmophobia

Food: Sitophobia

Death: Thanatophobia

Blood: Hemophobia

Being Alone: Monophobia

Women: Gynephobia

Men: Androphobia

Crowds: Ochlophobia

Lightning: Astraphobia

Flowers: Anthophobia

Snow: Chionophobia

I could go on for many more pages but you get the idea.

Why are there so many things to be afraid of?

As long as we experience any part of life there will be a part of the world around us that can be fearful.

Having said this I feel that the only way to decide where these fears come from is to look deep into the subconscious mind.

How do we look into this place that we cannot see and are not aware of.

I see my subconscious mind as a place that you take an elevator to get to and it is down under the level of my conscious mind.

It is like the kitchen of my mind where fears, ideas, hidden thoughts, information and my inner voice cook up the negative and positive recipes of my life.

A strange analogy I realize but it helps to look at the fears inside this place with a sense of humour.

Seeing the fears in a way that takes away their power is a good way to get an understanding of what and why the fear is there in the first place.

I think that looking at our phobias and concerns with honesty as well can help to identify them and take away the mystery behind them.

Of course getting professional help is important and another tool in the elimination of the suffering we can and do experience because of the hold these phobias get on our mind.

Many people have said face the fear head on.

There is a time and place for this to happen and it is a delicate balance as to when this can and will take place.

Depending on the phobia and how long it has been going on as well as how determined a person is to doing the work required to help themselves plus just how deep seeded the problem is are only a few factors to be considered when dealing with a phobia.

Professionals can steer us in the direction we need to begin and guide us through the process plus they can give us tools to use such as books, medication and self help instruction.

There are behaviour modification techniques as well.

For as many types of fears and phobias there are, there are ways to help us rid ourselves or at the very least control and benefit thus leading us to a better quality of life.

Of course these are my thoughts and ways I feel are realistic in the dealing with the suffering I have been through.

Everyone can decide his or her own actions in this matter.

That is what is so great and unique about each of us.

We have the power to make a change so what will you decide to do?
