It takes the greatest effort to get out of bed in the morning. I am tired all day, yet when night comes, sleep evades me. (...)

It takes the greatest effort to get out of bed in the morning. I am tired all day, yet when night comes, sleep evades me. I stare at the ceiling, wondering what has happened to my life, and what will become of me. Nothing is getting done at work. I have projects to complete, but I can't think. I try to focus on my work, and I get lost. I keep wondering when the boss will discover how little I have accomplished. My wife does not understand. She keeps telling me to "snap out of it." I'm irritable all the time, and yell at the kids, then I feel terrible later. Nothing is fun any more. I can't read, and the music I used to enjoy so much does nothing for me. I am bored, but I feel like doing nothing. There are times, when I'm alone, that I think that life is hopeless and meaningless, and I can't go on much longer.

Does this sound like something you are experiencing? At one point in my life I had these same feelings. I had depression and anxiety as well. My life seemed out of control but I still knew I wanted to live a better, healthier, fuller life. I just did not know how to get to the place inside myself where I could make the starting point a reality.

I tried many forms of treatment from doctors , pills, hospitalization, religion and self-help techniques. Family members and friends also tried to be there for me but sometimes I was not even able to respond to their help.

Now I realize that I had to let time and effort along with a combination of different programs and techniques ,with some temporary medication to get me on the right emotional track so that I could recognize what was going on with me as well as help myself. My biggest challenge at the beginning of my search to end my depression was just having the energy to begin.

Each person has their own saturation point when it comes to depression. By this I mean , you get to a crisis point depending on your situation. It is at this point that I was able to begin my way back to a normal life. Each crisis point is a message and a warning to you that you must talk to someone , anyone who will listen because this saturation point is in the emotional danger zone.

When you are in the danger zone it is probably all you can do to get out of bed to go to the bathroom, but reach inside yourself and really examine your situation for one thing that will be your lifeline to safety. We all have even a teeny thought or image of something good that can be this line of hope. Even if you have to go out into the yard and yell at the top of your lungs, this will be your line of hope. Even people who exhibit seemingly bizarre behavior will get someone to notice them, thus getting your start back from the depths of depression.

You may even fight the people that want to help you. This is something that many depressed people do. Remember that depression is like a disease and you are in a state of pain and suffering. The behavior you exhibit during the road back to your life is nothing to be ashamed of. We do what needs to be done to get our lives back.

I want people who are suffering with depression , anxiety and other disorders to have hope. There are ways to get back into the life you want . You can even have a better one then before because you now have had an experience that gives you insight into what happens when you have depression . Knowledge of even difficult times has value. We learn about ourselves and if you are on the care giving end of someones depression you too have learned what to do and to recognize in someone should depression try to return .

I never believed I would learn anything good about the depression I suffered through but during my recovery and healing I stored the experience in my mind so I could use my depression to help others.

People think that you should forget the unpleasant experiences of your life but I feel that they can benefit you instead of debilitate you. Besides, it is not possible to forget the trauma of depressions and the resulting effects on ones life. However , just as in any traumatic experience there are methods to use when the depression or anxiety memories are triggered.

Through the research I did when I was examining and learning about my own depression ,I put together a number of self-help techniques that can be used to aid in treating anxiety, depression and a number of other disorders.

Even if this information is the lifeline to safety for you or someone you know, it is well worth a look.

1. Be predictable, don"t surprise them. If you say you are going to meet them somewhere at a certain time, be there. (...)

1. Be predictable, don"t surprise them. If you say you are going to meet them somewhere at a certain time, be there. If you agree to respond to a certain anxious habit in a certain way, stick to the plan.

2. Don"t assume that you know what the affected person needs, ask them. Make a mutual plan about how to fight the anxiety problem.

3. Let the person with the disorder set the pace for recovery. Its going to take months to change avoidance patterns, expect slow but increasingly difficult goals to be attempted.

4. Find something positive in every attempt at progress. If the affected person is only able to go part way to a particular goal, consider that an achievement rather than a failure. Celebrate new achievements, even small ones.

5. Don"t enable. That means don"t let them too easily avoid facing their fears, yet DO NOT FORCE them. Negotiate with the person to take one more step when he or she wants to avoid something. Gradually stop cooperating with compulsive or avoidance habits that the person may be asking you to perform. Try to come to an agreement about which anxiety habit you"re going to stop cooperating with. Take this gradually, it''s an important but difficult strategy.

6. Don"t sacrifice your own life activities too often and then build resentments. If something is extremely important to you, learn to say so, and if it''s not, drop it. Give each other permission to do things independently and to also plan pleasurable time together.

7. Don"t get emotional when the person with the disorder panics. Remember that panic feels truly horrible in spite of the fact that it is not dangerous in any way. Balance your responses somewhere between empathizing with the real fear a person is experiencing and not overly focusing on this fear.

8. Do say: "I am proud of you for trying. Tell me what you need now. Breath slow and low. Stay in the present. It''s not the place that''s bothering you, it''s the thought. I know that what you are feeling is painful, but it is not dangerous." Don"t say: " Don"t be anxious. Let''s set up a test to see if you can do this. Don"t be ridiculous. You have to stay, you have to do this. Don"t be a coward."

9. Never ridicule or criticize a person for becoming anxious or panicky. Be patient and empathetic, but don"t settle for the affected person being permanently stagnant and disabled.

10. Encourage them to seek out therapy with a therapist who has experience treating their specific type of problem. Encourage sticking with therapy for as long as steady attempts at progress are being made. If visible progress comes to a stop for too long, help them to re-evaluate how much progress they did make, and to renew their initial efforts at getting better.

There is no need to feel shame when you think or talk about anxiety. (...)

There is no need to feel shame when you think or talk about anxiety.

So many people have had or are now experiencing it and it has become politically correct to talk about our mental illnesses or disorders. As you know, anyone who is perceived as having a different personality from the majority of the public or perhaps what others use to call odd and eccentric is no longer having to sweep their condition, concerns or treatment under the rug ,so to speak.

We discuss any subject these days and sometimes it has been said that perhaps we really do not need to know every detail of any given subject. Being informed is always a good thing ,even before Martha Stewart coined that phrase. However, as in all things in the universe, there is an opposite side to the know it all theory.

When too much information, depending again on what is being discussed is put forth, that thing we know as stress, panic, anxiety and depression can arise for some of us. How does one get to a place where the balance of the need to know scenario is in check or insync with a healthy amount of knowledge? That is based on the individual I believe. Only you can say when there has been too much information presented to you on your plate. Sometimes if the information is saturating your mind, it is a good idea to stop what you are reading, watching or listening to, so that you can take a break and return to things after a time. We all have our own point of saturation. This does not have anything to do with a persons intelligence. As with any task, we will do what we can at a pace that is comfortable for each of us. Take the pressure off of yourself to be as quick to learn or accomplish a task as someone else does it. When you give yourself permission to be yourself and stop the comparisons, I know that you will receive more benefits from your efforts. It is better to gain knowledge comfortably when it concerns your state of mind and well being. Remember what the word individual means and realize it means you.

Learning new information about anxiety and mental health can be a mystifying experience so leave the shame behind and concentate on the experience of coping and recovery. Here is some information for you as you begin your recovery.

Check it out here: http://www.anxietyended.com/overcome

Perhaps you would like to make a comment on how you think some people cope with what they see as an association between shame and anxiety.

This may be a bit tongue in cheek but it is a true story. I know this for a fact as I am the one who had the heart attack. (...)

This may be a bit tongue in cheek but it is a true story. I know this for a fact as I am the one who had the heart attack.

No, I did not use the book to break my fall when I was in the throws of the attack, or to rest my head on in the ambulance. I used it two months later as medication.

Medication works on your brain to change your mood, thought patterns or act on the pain control centers.

I wanted to find a way to help myself. I thought that if I changed my attitude and mindset I could release the hold my heart attack was having on my well being. I felt stuck in one emotional and financial place.

After a heart attack there is a period of adjustment that takes place. Depending on your individual case you may need to stop working at your old job and find a new way to receive an income. I had to do this and found out how to write a book, start a blog and post articles at different sites to get my message out there.

I was always interested in psychology and I recognized that now I could turn that desire about the human mind into the study of anxiety, panic, depression and other disorders.

Until I had a reason to focus on my burning desire and the opportunity came along , I was not fulfilling my lifes interest. When there was a problem and I found a solution to it, this was the way I began to get my life back in order again.

On a personal level, I was thrust into a physical situation that I was having difficulty with. I was not able to be as active as I had been, therefore putting me at risk of gaining weight . This bothered me until I realized that I felt happy and grateful to be alive. I learned from studying The New Think And Grow Rich philosophy that I had choices and began associating with people who had a like minded attitude. I used the time I had ,because I was now working from home, to read and gain knowledge about what options I now had and how I was going to use these options for a better, more productive life.

Before the heart attack I now realize that I was only using part of my personal potential. I felt more confident and positive once I allowed myself to open up my mind to the concept of a new way of thinking.

It is natural to slip back into the old patterns of thinking and acting but I work and live the teachings and philosophy of The New Think And Grow Rich each day. At first I felt awkward about the changes going on inside of me, but with each passing day I saw the benefits that putting out good, brings back more good. I have many daily examples of this . I saw these benefits because I was looking for them and I believe that I will get what I want when I have done the work or sown the seeds that need to be sown.

Some desires will take longer than others to manifest themselves. It is not like pulling a rabbit out of a hat, events happen in their own time when you have followed the necessary steps required.

I have been saved by the opportunities I now recognize and the effort I am willing to put forth. This is why I can honestly say that The New Think And Grow Rich saved me after a heart attack.

I got inspired and took action on my desire to do and be more.

Find out for yourself what I am talking about at:

Truly, thoughts are things when they are mixed with definiteness of purpose, persistence, and a burning desire for their translation into riches.
One day Edwin C. (...)

Truly, thoughts are things when they are mixed with definiteness of purpose, persistence, and a burning desire for their translation into riches.

One day Edwin C. Barnes discovered how true it is that people really do Think And Grow Rich. His discovery did not come about at one sitting. It came little by little, beginning with a burning desire to become a business associate of the great Edison.

One of the chief characteristics of Barnes desire was that it was definite. He wanted to work along with Edison, not for him. Observe carefully, the description of how he went about translating his desire into reality, and you will have a better understanding of the thirteen principles that lead to riches. Most people find it easier to whine about why they can not do something.

You will find out that you can change that attitude by reading and studying The New Think And Grow Rich book. When this desire, or impulse of thought, first flashed into his mind, he was in no position to act upon it. Two difficulties stood in his way.

He did not know Mr. Edison, and he did not have enough money to pay his railroad fare to Orange, New Jersey. These difficulties were sufficient to have discouraged the majority of men from making any attempt to carry out their desire. But his was no ordinary desire! He was so determined to find a way to carry out his desire that he finally decided to travel by blind baggage, rather than be defeated. To the uninitiated, this means that he went to East Orange on a freight train.

The disheveled, not bathed Barnes presented himself at the Edison laboratory, and announced he had come to go into business with the inventor. Check that one out! A bum throws himself before a multi-millionaire businessman! How seldom does the bum get a word in that works? What do you find is the difference?

The attitude that Barnes had was the driving force behind his desire to get what it was he wanted from his association with Mr. Edison. This attitude is what determines the difference between those who see themselves as successful, do become successful and get what they want from life and those who do not.

A little cheap specialized knowledge was to yield windfall profits.

They sold the machinery to a junk man for a few hundred dollars, and took the train back home. Some junk men are dumb, but not this one! He called in a mining engineer to look at the mine and do a little calculating. The engineer advised that the project had failed, because the owners were not familiar with fault lines. His calculations showed that the vein would be found just three feet from where the Darbys had stopped drilling! That is exactly where it was found! The junk man took millions of dollars in ore from the mine, because he knew enough to seek expert counsel before giving up.

Most of the money which went into the machinery was procured through the efforts of R.U. Darby, who was then a very young man. The money came from his relatives and neighbors, because of their faith in him. He paid back every dollar of it, although he was years in doing so.

Long afterward, Mr. Darby recouped his loss many times over, when he made the discovery that desire can be transmuted into gold. The discovery came after he went into the business of selling life insurance. Remembering that he lost a huge fortune because he stopped three feet from gold, Darby profited by the experience in his chosen work, by the simple method of saying to himself, I stopped three feet from gold, but I will never stop because men say no when I ask them to buy insurance.

Darby is one of a small group of fewer than fifty persons who sell more than a million dollars in life insurance annually. He owes his stickability to the lesson he learned from his quitability in the gold mining business.

Success is a causable event. One of the powerful principles in The NEW Think And Grow Rich is a lesson that Napoleon Hill and Ted Ciuba teach in the Authors Preface of The NEW Think And Grow Rich.

Here is how the author put it. Like all things in nature, knowledge of guiding principles gives you the potential power to harness those forces, such as knowledge of aerodynamics allows us to fly hundreds of passengers at a time on intercontinental flights.

In the same manner, the ways to wealth are learnable and applicable by anyone of ordinary intelligence. Riches are a result.

The most fully actualizing are the rich, look around. The people who are living the best lives are the rich and wealthy. Really, it ought to be obvious. It is not the working stiff trapped into the grind of work, get check, two week's vacation, too broke to go, no time or money to even take care of yourself.

Money gives you resources, reach, opportunities, companions, travel, education, housing, transportation, vacations, ability to have more meaningful relationships, and a thousand and one other gifts.

That is why so many drive mopeds and small motorcycles in many third-world countries. There is no money for more and they frequently never leave their neighborhood. Born, living, and dying among their family members.

While there is something to be said about the simplicity of the poor, the simple fact remains, money is power. Power is the ability to do, see, own, experience, and contribute.

The more money you have, the more advantages you have. And with the more you have, the more you can bestow.

Modest wealth can be great prosperity. Speaking of wealth,we throw around a lot of heavyweights in this treatise. I call them titans because they are so exceptional, they are mythic, they are bigger than life. People like Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and Charles Schwab. People like Bill Gates, Sam Walton, Ray Kroc, Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson, Donald Trump, and Pierre Omidyar.

I would not want you to get the wrong idea, it is not just about joining the ranks of the super rich. A good many of the examples in this book and especially in the available supplementary materials, feature entrepreneurs who have encountered financial freedom with all the blessings they could ask for on Earth on much less than the billions the titans earn.

Besides, The NEW Think And Grow Rich was not written for the titans, they already have it, it is written for you. And when you cut to the core of it , it is really about achieving the lifestyle you want , doing it consciously and doing it soundly. Being in a state of abundance.

An abundant life always consumes a good sum of money. Therefore, that is the importance of studying the ways and means of acquiring money. According to your own definite chief aims, modest wealth can indeed be great prosperity.

The same rules apply for wealth and actualization at all levels. You get to control the intensity of your vision and your results. The method is the same for any level.

Using the philosophy that being abundant can facilitate good works in the world is a new concept to some people. You soon come to know that this way of thinking is a way that can accomplish so much good for you, your family, friends associates and even globally.

With the introduction of the internet people have been brought closer together than ever before.

Just think for a moment about the internet. Where would our world be today if a group of people had not taken a chance and went ahead with their idea to develop an idea of such a thing, using strange technology.

It may have been thought of as strange because only a few individuals could see the potential in such a thing and went their own way to accomplish their goal.

There are many ideas that have yet to be realized because that one person has not gone against all the nay sayers and disbelievers.

The New Think And Grow Rich book is the key to unlocking the untapped potential inside us all.

Find out how to tap into your own potential.

What does a Think And Grow Rich philosophy have to do with losing anxiety.

Once upon a time I lived in a large family and suffered from anxiety and depression. I struggled to maintain my duties as a mother, wife, friend and employee.

I say duties just to give you an idea of the must do attitude I was living with. I struggled each day to do what I thought was expected of me. I love my family but the internal turmoil I went through on a daily basis was robbing me of a better quality of life.

As time went on I followed the usual methods for the treatment of anxiety and depression but I felt like I was always on hold, waiting for a marked improvement in my well being.

I did research into the world of depression and anxiety only to be met with confusion and more questions.

Time has a way of going by even if you are not getting all you can from your life.

I was good at disguising what I was going through, even from myself it seemed. I did not know that anxiety and depression were affecting my immune system as well as causing trauma psychologically.

Increased episodes would appear with greater intensity during the holidays. It was a year ago that I noticed a shift in the way I was feeling and I was having better results dealing with my anxiety and depression.

After suffering a heart attack that I believe was partially caused by stress as a result of years of anxiety and depression, I found a way to begin to heal from my past experiences.

I slowly became involved with people who once had experienced a similar lifestyle and had made personal changes by following the teachings, lessons and ideals found in the Think And Grow Rich philosophy.

My way of thinking about life and what was possible soon started to build a new personal foundation at an inner level for me.

Just as you begin to creep then crawl and walk then run as you develop physically as a human being or using another analogy, the steps needed to build a house, you can see that I am saying , you need a beginning point . At this point you are launched onto a path that makes a great deal of sense once you are doing the internal work necessary.

I used the word work but making a personal change and shift in attitude is a positive form of the word.

After creating my own book on anxiety and depression recovery, I was introduced to a group that was studying the Think And Grow Rich philosophy for riches. It sounded interesting and I wanted to hear what this philosophy for riches was all about.

I was intrigued by the word riches. Riches was a word with many aspects associated to it.

When you are learning something new and empowering, your whole perception regarding personal and financial possibilities is inspiring and you find that you want to learn and do more.

This process of change comes with time and the effort you put into doing it. I can tell you that not only do holidays and everyday now have a new outlook but I see the possibilities ahead with a sense of faith and have found a burning desire inside of me to move forward in my endeavor for personal and financial freedom.

There are many new ideas to study and I am building my internal mindset so that I will have changed the old ways of living just to get by, both personally and financially into a formula I will live by everyday.

You can find the same change for yourself and pass it on to others once you become involved with like minded individuals. People all over the globe are learning to better their quality of life.

I started out suffering but found the Think And Grow Rich philosophy was better than any medication I could ever find.

I can not cover all that I have learned here today, however, you can learn it all at:

http://www.anxietyended.com/mastermind

Comment on what this philosophy is doing to change your life for the better. It is for all the holidays and everyday to follow.

Many ask how does thinking about getting rich make it happen?
You can kick start your journey to real riches in a financial and personal way by following a formula or recipe for success. (...)

Many ask how does thinking about getting rich make it happen?

You can kick start your journey to real riches in a financial and personal way by following a formula or recipe for success.

Here is the most significant fact. The subconscious mind takes any orders given to it in a spirit of absolute faith and acts upon those orders, although they often have to be presented over and over again. Through repetition the subconscious mind interpretes our orders.

Your method, recipe or formula by which desire for riches is transmuted into its financial equivalent consists of 6 definite, practical steps.

1. Fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire. It is not sufficient to say that you want plenty of money. Be definite in the amount. There is a psychological reason to be definite.

When you study in a MasterMind group that teaches you to Think And Grow Rich it will become clear as to why this exercise is important.

2. Determine exactly what you intend to give in return for the money you desire. There is no such reality as something for nothing. The only way you can get massively rich is to contribute massively to society. It is the law.

3. Establish a definite date when you intend to possess the money you desire.

4. Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire. Begin at once, whether you are ready or not to put your plan into action. You can refine the details of your plan. It is important to not just think about the plan, but do something now. By taking action, you will have made that commitment to your subconscious mind.

5. Write out a clear and concise statement of the amount of money you intend to aquire, name the time limit for its acquisition, state what you intend to give in return for the money and describe clearly the plan through which you intend to accumulate it.

6. Read your written statement aloud, twice daily, once just before retiring for the night and once after arising in the morning. As you read, see, feel and believe yourself already in possession of the money.

It is important that you follow the instructions described in these 6 steps. It is especially important that you observe and follow the instructions in the sixth step.

As you follow these steps, enter into the feel of the vision until you are seduced to believe it is real, just like a real dream.

Where are you? What do you see? What do you hear? Who are you with? What are the people saying? What charities are you helping? What is the weather doing? Where are you? What are you wearing? How do you feel? What do you do to celebrate? Are you at dinner? Where? What is the course you are eating?

As you can see here, there is definite detail that goes into the impression you are feeding your subconscious mind.

How many people do you know with written goals, a plan to achieve them and so much drive, they are currently in action pursuing their dreams.

That is where it starts, that is principle number one. It is just thinking, but everything flows from that.

There are many interesting and life changing experiences waiting for anyone who has the burning desire to put their plan into action on a daily basis.

These exercises will bear fruit just as if you were to plant a seed and care for that particular seed according to its specific needs. You may have heard the expression, the seeds of desire. I believe that small phrase sums up the process of a Think And Grow Rich philosophy.

MasterMind groups study the Think And Grow Rich philosophy inorder to get the benefits of the collective brain power generated by a meeting of the minds.

Everyone has moments in life where they feel down. (...)

Everyone has moments in life where they feel down. Sadness, hopelessness and loneliness are entirely natural human emotions and experiencing them is not, in and of itself, evidence of a mental health problem or disorder. In fact, those who are unable to feel lonely or “blue” are probably more likely to have a serious difficulty of some sort as those who can!

So, if experiencing sadness isn’t a demonstration of depression, what is? At what point does one move from simply experiencing the highs and lows of life normally to having a problem that requires attention?

There is no clear bright line separating sadness or a “low” feeling from depression. However, those who feel this way often or for a prolonged period of time may have a problem that justifies additional investigation and concern. When one experiences these down feelings and they don’t subside, they may be suffering from depression.

Depression is a disorder that impacts all areas of one’s life. It tends to change appetites, sleeping patterns, feelings of self-worth and self-esteem, and one’s ability to function normally.

When one is depressed, they cannot simply make the problem go away with willpower or dedication. The low feelings don’t simply disappear because one wants them to do so, and without intervention those feelings and their awful side effects can last for extended periods of time.

There are many ways people try to cope with depression and these coping processes can lead to more problems if the person is unable to master the” skills” needed.

“How can you feel like mastering any skills when you are in the depths of the depression” you ask.

I feel the first step is Defining what are the signs and symptoms…

Feelings of intense sadness.

A heightened sense of irritability or impatience.

A loss of interest in formerly enjoyed activities.

A decline in the ability to make decisions.

Changes in eating habits, appetite, or weight.

Reduced sex drive.

A loss of energy or an overwhelming sense of fatigue.

A heightened feeling of guilt.

Feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness.

A sense of strong restlessness.

A loss in ability to concentrate or to remember

Suicidal thoughts

By knowing the signs and symptoms this is a starting point for an understanding that what we are feeling is real .That is in of itself the beginning to being released from depression.

“For 40 years, 7 months, 4 days and 3.9 hours I suffered from anxiety and panic attacks - especially after my heart attack on August 12th, 5:00am EST 2006. As a result of my suffering, I decided I would go on a crusade to reveal the most powerful, most effective and most successful system for living an Anxiety and Panic Free Life.” - Lorraine Roach, Founder AnxietyEnded.com Visit: http://www.anxietyended.com to discover what 99.2% of ALL anxiety and panic sufferers do wrong, and how to make sure YOU avoid it.

Why Should We Care About Depression? (...)

Why Should We Care About Depression?

Often, we think of medical issues as being “the other guy’s concern.”

Why, for instance, would we bother spending our time thinking about arthritis if we feel comfortable and limber?

Why would we stew over tuberculosis when we are able to breathe freely and clearly?

The logic behind this line of thinking is understandable.

If it doesn’t affect us, there doesn’t seem to be a compelling reason to care a great deal about the problem.

Sure, we want to have some knowledge about preventing the onset of some diseases and disorders, but we are not apt to spend a great deal of time considering or researching maladies for which we lack a diagnosis.

There are exceptions to this rule, however, and one of the most notable is the matter of depression.

Depression is an illness about which we all should care and to which we should all pay close attention.

What makes depression unique among all of the other illnesses and diseases?

There are at least three very good reasons for even the most mentally healthy among us to keep up to date about depression.

The significance of the three reasons outlined in this article is amplified by one fact: there is a depression epidemic underway.

The United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) has projected that by the year 2020, depression will be the world’s second most dangerous and devastating disease, second only to heart disease.

The rate of increase in depression diagnoses among children is increasing at a frightening clip—every year sees at least an additional twenty percent increase in the incidence of depression among young people.

Some estimates assert that nearly a quarter of all people will some day suffer from depression.

To make matters even worse, none of these trends are abating.

Depression continues to grow at an alarming rate with no end in sight to the problem.

The sheer magnitude of the depression problem may be impressive in and of itself, but it also amplifies the need for all of us to track and understand the disease. This is true for three primary reasons. The first justification for concern is the near certainty that depression will touch each of our lives in a very direct way. The statistics recounted above make it almost impossible to avoid having a loved one, friend or close associate who suffers from depression. Depression is an illness that will enter all of our lives indirectly, at the very least. Whether it is a spouse, parent or best friend, you will someday encounter the devastating impact of depression upon someone you know well.
Secondly, the increasing prevalence of depression increases the likelihood that you may eventually experience the problem. Although depression is more likely among those with a family history of the problem, it does strike others unexpectedly, too. And, contrary to widely held beliefs, it does not require a certain trigger or dramatic event to develop. Depression is unbiased and indiscriminate. It impacts people of all socioeconomic backgrounds, races and gender. Working with the assumption that depression does impact twenty-five percent of the population, ask yourself a simple question: “Is there any other disease you would ignore if you knew you had a one in four chance of contracting it?” The answer is obvious. We even make sure to immunize ourselves against far less likely maladies.

Finally, even if one was somehow able to escape dealing with a depressed acquaintance and was able to avoid contracting the disorder themselves, they are still sure to feel its impact.

Depression is a huge drain on the economy, costing literally tens of billions of dollars annually due to medical treatment costs, work absenteeism and an overall drop in productivity.

From the viewpoint of civics alone, one should have an interest in the disease and its treatment.

It’s easy to ignore many medical conditions—especially if one is healthy. Depression, however, does not make the list of diseases any of us can fail to understand. This growing epidemic affects all of us and warrants a high level of attention. Three Kinds Of Depression:

Every case of being sad or lonely is not an example of depression.

Low feelings are normal and even healthy.

Depression refers to more severe cases where those negative feelings take hold and have a more serious or lasting influence on one’s well-being or ability to function.

There are three types of depression, all of which share that similarity.

One is known as dysthymia.

Dysthymia is a chronic, low-grade depression that lasts over a long period of time.

This type of depression is “sneaky” and may not be spotted easily.

Its long-lasting nature allows one to “adjust” to its symptoms somewhat, making a depressed mood seem like the normal every day nature of things.

Dysthymia sufferers have the overall quality of their lives undermined by depression, often without realizing it.

They may think they are simply dour people or that life is inevitably something less than enjoyable.

Those with dysthymia are able to function with a high degree of normalcy, but are constantly nagged by feelings of sadness, despair, loneliness and related emotions.

Situational depression can have more severe symptoms.

This is the form of depression that rears its head in direct response to external circumstances.

Any number of traumas or trying events can trigger a bout of situational depression.

The death of a loved one, or the loss of a job, for instance, may produce intense and temporarily debilitating depressive symptoms.

The key to differentiating situation depression from its clinical counterpart is the temporary nature of the symptomology and the fact that it can often be traced back to a specific cause. One should note that traumatic events can also herald the onset of clinical depression, however. Those suffering from situational depression may find life very difficult for a period of time. They may feel agitated or nervous, have disruptions in sleeping habits, or experience other common depressive symptoms. However, the problem usually passes as the individual learns to cope with the problems that triggered the episode.

Clinical depression is more severe. If one experiences symptoms that interfere with regular functioning for a period longer than two weeks in length, they may be suffering from clinical depression. Clinical depression can last indefinitely and can be quite devastating.

The hallmark of clinical depression is the inability to enjoy almost any aspect of life.

In some cases, the sufferer may even begin to consider suicide as an alternative to continuing on in their depressed state.

Symptoms can run the gamut from a vague sense of unease to utter and complete hopelessness.

Interventions are usually required for one to overcome clinical depression.

These can involve the use of psychotherapy, prescription antidepressants and other strategies aimed at solving the problem.

Those who do not seek treatment for this condition may find the problem literally fatal in the long run.

Fortunately, these methods can often be successful in helping one overcome the dreaded symptoms of clinical depression.

Depression is a growing problem ,and as the epidemic continues to grow, it only makes sense for all of us to gain a better understanding of the disease.

The World Health Organization posits that by the year 2020 depression will be second most devastating disease facing humanity, second only to heart disease in its impact.

Depression touches the lives of most everyone and all of us should develop a stronger appreciation of what separates depression from simply having a “lousy week.”

Although the term “depression” may encompass many things in popular use, in a strict sense it refers to one of the three variations mentioned in this article. Dysthymia, situational depression and clinical depression represent the three primary types of depression. They share a great deal in common, but can be differentiated from one another by the severity of their symptoms and their longevity.Popular Arguments Against Antidepressants:

As depression continues to increase, so does the use of antidepressant medications. These prescription drugs are widely lauded for their ability in treating the disorder and are immensely popular. Many attribute their ability to conquer depression the antidepressant medications they were prescribed.

However, support for these drugs is not universal.

There are many who argue that the use of antidepressants does not represent an optimal intervention for depression and that other means of treating the disease should be preferred.

There are some in the anti-medication crowd who will argue that research and opinion supporting the use of prescription antidepressants is so tainted by the vested financial interests of the pharmaceutical industry that it must be approached with a great deal of suspicion. Those sharing this viewpoint will argue that antidepressants are wildly over-prescribed and that the number of people diagnosed with depressive disorders includes many who probably need no intervention whatsoever.

Even those who do not share this hard-line perspective, however, still find occasion to critique the use of antidepressants.Critics of antidepressants often begin their attack on the drugs by noting that no one is absolutely certain why the medications work at all in successful cases. They are naturally suspicious of these “wonder drugs” because there is a lack of certainty about exactly why the drugs tend to produce the desired results in many patients. Additionally, those who are “not sold” on antidepressants will often argue that they primarily serve to mask depression’s symptoms while leaving the underlying causes of the disorder intact. Some, for instance, will point to research that indicates depression could be the result of significant emotional trauma earlier in life. It is possible, they argue, to deal with those issues and to redirect ways of thinking after making that realization as a means to ending depression. Medication, in their estimation, leaves the underlying problem intact while failing to solve the problem created by these underlying problems.Antidepressants, critics will argue, are too rife with possible negative side effects to justify their use in light of those observations.

All prescription medications, it seems, carry with them some risk of unintended consequences and antidepressants are not an exception to that rule.

Patients taking the medications can suffer from a variety of side effects ranging from the merely inconvenient to the severe.

In some cases antidepressants can actually spur a wholesale increase in depressive symptoms.

Those who disagree with the growing trend toward increase antidepressant use say that performing a cost/benefit analysis regarding the drugs demonstrates a reason to seek out alternatives. They maintain that the risk of improvement, when viewed in the context of the uncertain nature of the drugs and their potential detrimental side effects, should compel one not to seek treatment from depression in the form of a pill. What alternatives to antidepressants do critics provide?Generally, their alternative treatments focus on a combination of more natural solutions and therapy. Improved nutrition and diet, for instance, may be offered as a means of reducing depression.

Some also call for the use of particular herbal supplements in order to balance nutrition and to deal with depression’s symptoms.

In conjunction with such alternatives, critics of pharmaceutical solutions also support the use of therapy as a means of dealing with depression.

As noted, many believe that underlying emotional problems cause depression and that it can be best dealt with by recognizing and “healing” those root causes.

Behavioral therapies focusing upon the development of new skills and ways of approaching problems are offered as an alternative to drug use.

It should be noted, of course, that many proponents of prescription “solutions” also support the use of therapy in conjunction with medications.

Antidepressants are widely used and there is no evidence to suggest that use will decrease in the immediate future.

On the contrary, it appears as if the use of antidepressants as a mental health tool will actually continue to accelerate.

The level of criticism about these drugs, however, is substantial enough to warrant attention.

Anyone considering the use of antidepressants should at least be familiar with some of the arguments posited against them to insure that they will be making a fully informed decision regarding their mental health.
